ADDIS ABABA – African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat has congratulated William Ruto on his election as the next President of Kenya.
Ruto received 50.5% of the vote to win the closely fought August 9 election against 48.8% for Raila Odinga.
Odinga, who alleged there had been massive fraud, challenged the result in Kenya’s supreme court.
The Court on Monday ruled that Ruto was properly elected president, dismissing petitions seeking to annul the election result.
Following the judicial confirmation of the election outcome, AUC Chair Mahamat has “warmly congratulated” Ruto upon his election.
The 55-year-old current deputy president will be sworn in as the country’s fifth president next week, replacing Uhuru Kenyatta.
AUC Chair commended the outgoing President “for his strong and impactful leadership during his tenure of office.”
He also congratulated Kenya’s Electoral Commission, and all national stakeholders, for their “collective efforts and exemplary conduct” in holding elections up to the final Supreme Court ruling.
The African Union will continue supporting Kenya in its journey to deepen the country’s democracy, constitutionalism, good governance, and sustainable development, the chairperson added.
